📅 3-MONTH CURRICULUM (WEEKLY STRUCTURE)

📘 MONTH 1 – TECHNICAL FOUNDATIONS (Weeks 1–4)

WEEK 1 – Sixteenth-Note Reading

Theory:

  • Reading sixteenth notes

  • Counting: “1 e & a”

  • Breaking down subdivisions

Practical:

  • Sixteenth-note hand patterns

  • Single-stroke 16th warmups

  • Metronome: 70–80 BPM

WEEK 2 – Time Signatures (3/4 & 6/8)

Theory:

  • Understanding 3/4 time

  • Understanding 6/8 feel

  • Identifying strong beats

Practical:

  • 3/4 groove (snare on beat 3)

  • 6/8 groove (triplet feel)

  • Accent placement

WEEK 3 – Song Structure Basics

Theory:

  • Verse / Chorus / Bridge

  • Bars & sections

  • How drums support song structure

Practical:

  • Playing grooves for verse vs chorus

  • Changing intensity between sections

WEEK 4 – Rudiments: Paradiddles & More

Theory:

  • RLRR LRLL (PARADIDDLE)

  • Importance of sticking discipline

Practical:

  • Paradiddles at 80 BPM

  • Flams (intro level)

  • Accent control within rudiments

🥁 MONTH 2 – GROOVE DEVELOPMENT (Weeks 5–8)

WEEK 5 – Sixteenth-Note Grooves

Concepts:

  • Hi-hat 16ths

  • Kick placement variations

  • Ghost notes (intro level)

Practical:

  • Groove 1, Groove 2, Groove 3 (16th-based)

  • Tempo: 75–85 BPM

WEEK 6 – Foot Technique Development

Concepts:

  • Heel-up vs heel-down

  • Controlled rebound

  • Faster single kick awareness

Practical:

  • Single-kick exercises

  • Kick placement on 16th grids

WEEK 7 – Shuffle & 6/8 Beats

Concepts:

  • Shuffle feel

  • Triplet subdivisions

  • Swing vs straight feel

Practical:

  • Shuffle groove

  • 6/8 groove + fill

  • Playing with a swing metronome

WEEK 8 – Ensemble Groove Flow

Concepts:

  • Locking with bass guitar

  • Listening to bassist’s root note

  • “Pocket playing” vs “ busy playing”

Practical:

  • 8-bar cycles with bassist

  • Simple walking bass grooves

🎼 MONTH 3 – PERFORMANCE & CERTIFICATION (Weeks 9–12)

WEEK 9 – Transition Mastery

Concepts:

  • Switching from 4/4 → 3/4

  • Switching from 4/4 → 6/8

  • Bar-count awareness

Practical:

  • Teacher-guided transition drills

  • Groove → Fill → Time change patterns

WEEK 10 – Studio Skills & Overdubbing

Concepts:

  • What is overdubbing?

  • Layering percussion sounds

  • Balancing takes

Practical:

  • Record 1-minute groove with click

  • Add simple percussion overdub (clap/shaker)

WEEK 11 – Mock Assessment

Components:

  • Theory practice test

  • Rudiment evaluation at 80 BPM

  • Groove + time-signature shift rehearsal

  • Ensemble run-through

WEEK 12 – FINAL EXAMINATION

Theory – 20 Marks

  • Sixteenth-note notation

  • Time signatures: 3/4 & 6/8

Practical – 50 Marks

  • Paradiddles & rudiments at 80 BPM

  • Sixteenth-note grooves

  • Shuffle/6/8 groove

  • Smooth time-signature transitions

Performance – 30 Marks (Ensemble)

  • 1 Song performance with small group

  • Evaluated on:

    • Timing

    • Groove stability

    • Confidence

    • Responsiveness to band

🏅 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To receive the Skill-Ed Intermediate-1 Drum Certificate, the student must:

✔ Demonstrate accurate sixteenth-note reading

✔ Perform paradiddles & basic rudiments at 80 BPM

✔ Play sixteenth-note grooves with consistency

✔ Execute smooth transitions between 4/4, 3/4 & 6/8

✔ Record a 1-minute drum groove with metronome

✔ Complete one ensemble song performance

✔ Score 60/100 or above
