Theory

  • Parts of the keyboard / piano

  • Proper hand position, posture, finger numbers

  • Reading basic notation (treble clef, quarter notes, rests)

  • Understanding tempo & basic rhythm

Practical Skills

  • Finger warm-ups: 5-finger exercises (C position)

  • Simple right-hand melodies

  • Easy left-hand root-note patterns

  • Basic coordination: RH melody + LH single notes

  • Playing along to slow, simple songs

Band Participation

  • Group rhythm games

  • Playing basic chords while another student plays a simple drum beat or melody

Studio Experience

  • Introduction to MIDI keyboards

  • Students record a simple 4-bar melody

Certification Parameters

  • Maintain steady tempo at 60–80 BPM

  • Correct posture & finger placement

  • Play 3 simple melodies and 2 basic LH parts

  • Perform one play-along track

Exam Format (Model Assessment)

Theory (20 marks)

  • Label piano keys

  • Identify note values

Practical (60 marks)

  • Play 2 short melodies + 1 LH pattern

  • Play with metronome (1 minute)

Performance (20 marks)

  • Short play-along song
