Theory

  • Parts of the guitar (acoustic/electric)

  • Holding the guitar, pick grip, posture

  • Reading basic notation & tablature (TAB)

  • Understanding tempo & basic rhythm

Practical Skills

  • Basic warm-ups: single-string picking, simple finger exercises

  • Open chords: C, G, Am, Em, D

  • Basic strumming patterns (downstrokes, down-up)

  • Simple 1-bar fills (single-note lines)

  • Playing along to slow beginner songs

Band Participation

  • Group rhythm exercises

  • Playing simple chords while another student plays drums or keyboard

Studio Experience

  • Introduction to audio interface & DI recording

  • Students record a simple 4-bar chord pattern or riff

Certification Parameters

  • Maintain steady tempo at 60–80 BPM

  • Correct posture & pick/finger technique

  • Play 3 open-chord progressions and 2 simple riffs

  • Perform one play-along track

Exam Format (Model Assessment)

Theory (20 marks)

  • Label guitar parts

  • Identify note values / TAB symbols

Practical (60 marks)

  • Play 2 chord progressions + 1 riff

  • Play with metronome (1 min)

Performance (20 marks)

  • Short play-along song
